McCain Ad: “Outrageous”

This 30-second ad champions John McCain as the only candidate “who has the guts to stand up to wasteful government spending.” Sound Bite: “A million dollars for a Woodstock museum in a bill sponsored by Hillary Clinton: Predictable.”

McCain Ad: “Guts”

The latest ad from Senator John McCain emphasizes his record in opposing “wasteful spending by Congress.”

Romney Ad: “Business World”

In his latest campaign ad, Mitt Romney touts his business experience -- “turning around companies taught me how to manage budgets" -- and vows as President to "audit Washington top to bottom and cut spending.”

Obama-nomics

In a town meeting in Manchester, Iowa on July 15, Barack Obama says the US government will never deal with its budget deficit while spending $100 billion or so annually in Iraq. Sound Bite: “We’ve been borrowing from China to pay for this war. We’re running up the credit card on our children.”

Giuliani Preaches Fiscal Discipline

Rudy Giuliani says that he will bring fiscal discipline to the federal government just like he did to "out-of-control spending" in New York City. Sound Bite: “It led George Will to conclude that I ran the most conservative government in the last 50 years -- not just in New York City but in the entire country. I know how to do this.”

An “Honest” Candidate

At a Town Hall-style meeting in New Hampton, Iowa on May 27th, John Edwards answers a question about how he will deal with the growing federal budget deficit. Edwards says that while he's in favor of capping the deficit, he wants to spend more money on universal health care, education, energy development, poverty, etc. And you can't increase spending and reduce the deficit at the same time, he says -- "Not if you're being honest." Oh yeah, Edwards will also roll back tax cuts for those “rich people.” Jackie Mason on Edwards An apoplectic Jackie Mason doesn’t think much of John Edwards’s suggestion that Americans protest the Iraq war on Memorial Day. (He's also got a few things to say about the candidate’s haircut.)

Republican Debate: Federal Spending

Senator McCain wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent and rein in government spending. He mangles the "Congress spends like a drunken sailor" punchline but you get the point. Mitt Romney says he won't raise taxes and he’ll reduce government spending. Enough about benchmarks for Iraq, he says, how about benchmarks for government agencies.

Obama’s Fiscal Policy

After a Dr. Phil moment at a recent townhall meeting, Senator Barack Obama tells how he’ll fund education, health care and other programs: He’ll end the Iraq war and use some of that money and he’ll raise taxes on “the top 1% . . . they can afford it.” (He says he’s “blessed” to be in that category and even though the check he writes on April 15th is “scary,” it’s his obligation to make sure that “I’m reinvesting so the next generation can be just as fortunate as I was.”)

“A Billion Here, A Billion There . . .

. . . and pretty soon, you're talking about real money." That old chestnut attributed to the late Illinois Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen never gets old when it comes to talking about reining in federal spending. And, believe it or not, some voters actually care about this issue. But are any candidates even talking about fiscal restraint or cutting pork barrel spending? John McCain is: And so is Mitt Romney: Nothing on the subject from the Democratic candidates at this point.
