At a town hall meeting in St. Petersburg, an African-American disrupts Barack Obama’s speech. The cool candidate cools the situation. Later during the Q&A, the young man says Obama has not spoken “to the interests and . . . on behalf of the oppressed and exploited African community, or black community, in this country.” Obama disagrees.

Doctor, er, Reverend Jesse Jackson suggests that Barack Obama needs a radical surgical procedure. (Why can’t TV newspeople say “nuts”?) Apparently the Civil Rights Icon thinks the Democratic Candidate is “talking down to black people.” Take a look at Obama’s Father’s Day speech in which he addressed the topic of parental responsibility in the black community and see if you agree.
Sundays are never dull at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Reverend Jeremiah Wright may have retired but Father Michael Pfleger picked up the slack last week when he took the pulpit as guest preacher. He talks about exposing “white entitlement and supremacy” and lays into Hillary Clinton.
Sound Bite: “I really believe that she just always thought this is mine. ‘I’m Bill’s wife. I’m white. And this is mine. I just got to get up and step into the plate.’ And then out of nowhere came ‘Hey, I’m Barack Obama.’ And she said ‘Oh damn! Where did you come from? I’m white. I’m entitled. There’s a black man stealing my show.”
Judging by the standing ovation, the congregation seemed to enjoy the sermon.
Non-Hispanic white voters don’t much like the two Democratic candidates says a recent Gallup poll (May 1 - 18). John McCain beats Hillary Clinton 51% to 42% within this demographic and whomps Barack Obama 53% to 38%.
James Kotecki and David McMillan wonder whether Obama has gone from being not black enough to being too black.
Uh, on second thought, maybe Chris Matthews is right. Here’s Rev. James David Manning on “The Trinity of Hell” — Obama, Oprah and Rev. Wright.
Blacks and whites come together in Marietta, GA for a reasoned conversation on race in America.
Even though 65% of white folks are now voting for Hillary Clinton and 90% of blacks are voting for Barack Obama, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews thinks no one should be talking about race.
Sound Bite: “It’s almost like she’s [Clinton's] the Al Sharpton of white people.”
Reverend Wright sure knows how to deliver a sound bite. More here.
Bill Moyers’s interview with Reverend Jeremiah Wright is scheduled for broadcast on PBS tonight. In this promo clip Reverend Wright says he and his church are misunderstood and that his comments have been taken out of context. (More here.)
Sound Bite: “I felt it was unfair. I felt it was unjust. I felt it was untrue. I felt that those who were doing that were doing it for some very devious reason.”
Has Bill Clinton gone dotty? Or is he simply trying to sabotage his wife’s campaign so he can get back to work as a globe-trotting influence peddler? What is up with Bubba?
In a radio interview Monday with Pennsylvania station WHYY, the former president said that the Obama campaign “played the race card on me . . . and we now know from memos from the campaign and everything that they planned to do it all along.” (Audio clip here.) Today Clinton denied making the remark.
Later in the day a reporter asks Barack Obama about Clinton’s remarks. Not surprisingly, Obama is confused.
Sound Bite: “I have no idea what you’re talking about. What was he talking about? . . . Was there something that we had a plan to get him to say that my campaign was like Jesse Jackson’s? I don’t know what he’s referring to.”
John McCain voted against establishing a federal holiday for Martin Luther King back in the early ’80s. Today in Memphis at a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, he said “I was wrong.” Transcript of McCain’s remarks here.
In his speech earlier this week Barack Obama called for a dialogue on race. On The Daily Show Jon Stewart and “Senior Black Correspondent” Larry Wilmore demonstrate how smoothly that discussion will go.
Pastor Otis Moss III of Trinity United Church of Christ says Reverend Jeremiah Wright and the church itself have been “tranished and vilified” and “reduced to a sound bite . . . and a bite of anything is not good nutrition. You need a full meal.” He goes on to enumerate the church’s good works.
Trinity United Church has a YouTube channel and over the past few days they have posted numerous clips from Reverend Wright. (No ranting and raving about politics here - strictly old time religion.)
Reverend Wright: “He Will”
Meanwhile in Harlem, Pastor James Manning of Atlah World Missionary Church says Barack Obama is a “long-legged mack daddy ” — among other things.
