Mitt Romney’s festival of negative advertising continues with an attack on John McCain for championing a bill to let illegal immigrants say permanently and even get Social Security.

All it takes is “political leadership and will” to end illegal immigration, says Rudy Giuliani in this 30-second ad.
Mitt Romney tries to tamp down Mike Huckabee’s recent rise with this 30-second spot that differentiates their “records” on illegal immigration: Romney tough. Huckabee soft.
This 30-second spot says Mitt Romney can fix the “big problems” — like illegal immigration.
Rudy Giuliani addresses the Federalist Society — making his customary joke about being happy to be among those who agree with him, unlike his days in New York, den of liberals. He snips at Hillary Clinton for being for drivers’ licenses for illegal immigrants, then against, then for and against, then in favor of letting states decide. He says this is the only time in her career she has been in favor of states’ rights but this is the wrong time, for he argues that borders and immigration are the job of the federal government. The rest is him praising the Federalist Society.
Mitt Romney is a Jack Russell terrier, getting his teeth into an issue and not letting go. His latest is going after Mike Huckabee, who’s strong in Iowa, and Rudy Giuliani on giving tuition breaks to the children of illegal immigrants. He made one appearance two days ago and now he puts up three more appearances here, here, and here:
In this 30-second spot, folksy Fred Thompson sits at an old-time luncheonette counter next to a little girl with her grandma and tells us where he stands on illegal immigration.
Sound Bite: “Secure our borders and enforce the law. Giving up by granting amnesty is not the answer.”
The sound is terrible (hey, campaigns, just put a wireless mic on your guys and you won’t have this problem) but Mitt Romney goes after his opponents for having “a sanctuary state of mind.” He brags that he vetoed a bill to give tuition breaks to the children of illegal immigrants but says Rudy Giuliani backed them in New York (at the City University of NY, where — full disclosure — I teach), Mike Huckabee backed them in Arkansas, and Hillary Clinton backed them as well.
The latest ad from the Romney campaign leaves no doubt where Mitt stands on driver’s licenses, educational benefits and amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Sound Bite: “Immigration is great, but illegal immigration . . . that’s got to stop.”
Here’s another video from abrad2345, whose clips portray an angry white guy railing against the Democrats while driving to work. Ostensibly a Giuliani supporter (but not really, of course), abrad2345’s performance art spritzes are sometimes uneven but always compelling. More abrad2345 here.
At a parade in Las Vegas, Mike Gravel explains the abuse of power to a little kid and then goes after “rednecks” for opposing immigrants and he vows no borders or border fences.
A voter from Mesa, Arizona asks Fred Thompson if he will finish the wall on the Mexican border. Folksy Fred says he sure will and that’s just the start.
Sound Bite: “Any nation that cannot secure its borders ultimately will not remain a sovereign nation. We simply can’t continue in that direction,”
In last night’s Republican debate, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani squared off on illegal immigration.
Romney says securing the border alone can’t work: “You have to cut back on federal funding on cities that continue to call themselves sanctuary cities and welcome people in, as New York has done.”
Rudy says securing the border will end illegal immigration: “We need a tamper-proof single ID card for every single person who’s in this country from a foreign country.”
Both Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich go after NAFTA.
Kucinich sends a Labor Day message to the United Autoworkers promising them the moon:
Gravel blames some of the problem of illegal immigration on the failure of NAFTA to create jobs elsewhere.
Mitt Romney is running a radio ad in Iowa and New Hampshire that takes aim at illegal immigration and “sanctuary cities” — and by extension that America’s Mayor guy who seems to be so popular.
