McCain: I’m a Family Values Guy

And that means he’s against gay adoption. At least that seems to be his position if you can parse his painfully convoluted answer to a question from George Stephanopoulos. More here.

Going to the Chapel . . .

Ellen Degeneres is getting hitched this summer and she asks John McCain what he thinks about gay marriage.

College Daze for Clintons

At Butler University in Indiana, Chelsea Clinton is surprised to get a Monica Lewinsky question.

Sound Bite: “”Wow, you’re the first person actually that’s ever asked me that question in the, I don’t know maybe, 70 college campuses I’ve now been to, and I do not think that is any of your business,”

At an MTVu roundtable interview, Bill Clinton explains his position on the Defense of Marriage Act. When challenged by the students, the former president tells them how the “real world” works.

Debate: Gay General’s Clinton Connection

Last night’s Republican debate featured a question about gays in the military from Keith Kerr, a retired brigadier general who says he is gay. Shockingly, none of the candidates seemed to be in favor of changing the current “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. But for some reason Anderson Cooper decided to beat this dead horse, so he called on Kerr — who was in the audience — and Kerr restated the same question. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!. He got the same answer.

And that predictable exchange would have been lost in the debate shuffle except that it turns out the gay general has a Clinton connection. CNN explains:

Following the debate, CNN learned that Kerr was listed as a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Americans For Hillary Clinton Steering Committee.

CNN Senior Vice President and Executive Producer of the debate, David Bohrman, says, “We regret this, and apologize to the Republican candidates. We never would have used the General’s question had we known that he was connected to any presidential candidate.”

Prior to the debate, CNN had verified his military background and that he had not contributed any money to any presidential candidate.

Following the debate, Kerr told CNN that he’s done no work for the Clinton campaign. He says he is a member of the Log Cabin Republicans and was representing no one other than himself.”

MORE:

The Clinton campaign has posted a clip of General Kerr’s interview this morning on CNN. Kerr says that although he allowed his name to be listed by the Clinton committee, he has no role in the campaign and no one from the Clinton campaign has been in touch with him.

VoterVid: Questions for Republican Debate

It may be the dog days of August, but voters continue to submit video questions for the Republican CNN/YouTube debate.

Cancer researcher Geoff Wahl wants to know what the candidates will do to ensure adequate funding to combat the disease.

Extra credit to Michael from Washington, DC for coming up with a creative approach to the gays in the military question.

Will you support a National Service Draft, asks Roger from Washington.

Question for Ron Paul: “Why is it so hard to believe that you are a Republican?”

What I Meant to Say Was . . .

Bill Richardson got all tangled up at the recent gay and lesbian forum in Los Angeles when answering a question about whether homosexuality is choice or biology. Richardson said “It’s a choice.” Buzzzzz. Wrong answer, Governor.

After the forum, clarifications ensued. Richardson said he “didn’t understand the question.” He does understand damage control, however, so here’s a campaign clip featuring a gay and lesbian activist and a New Mexico government official talking about how Richardson has supported gay and lesbian issues for years.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and More

At the gay and lesbian forum hosted by the Human Rights Campaign and Logo, Senator Hillary Clinton tells how she will repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy instituted by President Clinton. (It was a “transitional” policy, she says.) She also explains her position of favoring civil unions over gay marriage.

Melissa Etheridge says gays and lesbians supported President Clinton and that he threw them “under the bus” after he was elected. Hillary explains that change takes time and, besides, those bigoted Republicans are to blame.

Our friends on CNN

In its leadup to the YouTube/CNN debate, Paula Zahn is interviewing some people who’ve posted video questions and among them tonight will be friends of PrezVid. Mary C. Matthews producer of IdolCritic (the other production so far from Exploding Video, the venture that makes PrezVid) and her mate, Jen, asking a simple, clear, direct question:

“Would you allow us to be married . . . to each other?”

: LATER: And here’s a pastor making a powerful sermon on the same topic:

VoterVid: Gay issues

I thought we’d see more of this by now: voters mashing up the stands of all the candidates on a single set of issues. Here’s a compilation of seven frontrunners’ views on gay marriage.

Gallup: Same-Sex Marriage

A recent Gallup poll (May 10-13) probes one of the hot-button social issues of the ‘08 campaign. The question: “Should same-sex marriages be recognized by law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages?”

Survey says: Not valid — 53%. Valid — 46%. The breakdown among party lines is predictable: 80% of Republicans say not valid, while 62% of Democrats say valid.

Clinton: “I do not think homosexuality is immoral.”

Hillary Clinton states her position straight up, without qualification. Also, she explains why she wants to repeal the military policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” instituted in 1993 with the support of then-President Bill Clinton.
