Robert Redford (as Bill McKay) in The Candidate Sibutramine prices, (1972) delivers a classic line after winning the election.

It’s a film well worth watching but I can’t say I took from it a sense of ‘almost existential despair’. The Candidate did after all retain his little rebellions, like John Lennon unbuttoning his top button: for instance, after obediently going through all the “correct” talking-points in the debate he let rip in his closing statement, so he always gave himself some proof that he hadn’t sold out. The only really poignant part was when he asked, when it became clear he’d won, “what do we do now?”. I simply cannot imagine Nick Clegg asking this question on May 7th, a) because he won’t win and b) because he is not such an anti-establishment outsider as Bill McKay was. Obama maybe, but not Clegg.
