Don’t piss off Dave

For those following John McCain’s snub of David Letterman, here are the highlights:

Sound bite: “Hey, John, need a ride to the airport?”

The sequel:

Sound bite: “Now I’m feeling like an ugly date. I feel used.”

John McCain’s last minute snub of Letterman was excused in a way that reminded one of Superman’s super hearing detecting a call for help from his fellow legislators in Washington. Please Mr. Superman, come break our historic deadlock or else the globe would melt down in a superfinance explosion engineered by Lex Luthor of Wall Street. But he didn’t fly back to Washington with his cape streaming behind him. And he lost a very large audience (and their sympathy) for his concerns by dissing Letterman and choosing instead to get a few seconds on a news show with Katy Couric.

Likewise his dissing of Paris Hilton (one of my least favorite human beings) a few weeks ago was another misreading of the power of popular culture. Ms. Hilton created a wildly amusing “campaign video” that ridiculed the shoot-from-the-hip M.O. that McCain resorts to far too often. If you haven’t seen Hilton’s video go google it right away. It is a terrific hoot. Having Paris and Dave showering McCain with paint balls may well influence a lot of votes.

It turns out he’s an opportunist more interested in his image management than in honesty and keeping his word. How can you have honor without honesty?

Another McPain flip-flop and what for? Cancels Letterman to be on Couric then goes to Washington to be wishy-washy on Bush’s bailout. Says he won’t go to the debate until the economy is fixed then he flip-flops again. Where is the sense of direction? Where is the leadership?

    Does Sarah Palin know?

Dave said it: “the road to the White House runs through me.” Truer words, Senator. Dave is the heartland, see what I’m sayin’?
