JFK set the rhetorical bar high in his 1961 Inauguration speech when he called on Americans to serve their country: “Ask not what your country can do for you . . .”
Since then nearly every presidential candidate echoes that “service to America” theme with some plan or prosposal or inspirational call for action. In a speech yesterday in Colorado Springs, Barack Obama took his shot, outlining a laundry list of initiatives.
Sound Bite: “[After 9/11] We were ready to step into the strong current of history and to answer a new call for our country, but the call never came. Instead of a call to service, we were asked to go shopping.”
