Making fun

This is giving me an uh-oh feeling about tonight’s debate: CNN makes fun of the ridiculous questions submitted on YouTube. That’s the standard media narrative about the stuff that we make: We’re just a bunch of silly folks. Arrrggghhh. (Sadly, CNN doesn’t make its video embeddable.)

You’re right — it’s a classic example of taking some offbeat submissions, jamming them together, and subtly making viewers infer that it’s a theme for ALL of the questions. I, like you, feel slightly insulted. It’s quite the “laugh at the people” story, although I’m sure if it’s intentional. It’s a silly story from a silly reporter who specializes in silly stories.

I guess we’ll see in a few hours as to how much the network truly respects citizen-driven action. I’m optimistic for now, but it fades when I see things like this.

Ugh, I’ve looked through a lot of them randomly and didn’t see any like that. Now the idea of letting YouTube users pick the questions looks completely ridiculous, even though there’s no way any of the ones like that would get chosen and having CNN hand-select them kind of defeats the purpose.
