Republican candidate Mike Huckabee uses his turn in YouTube’s YouChoose ‘08 Spotlight to tell viewers that he supports the “FairTax.” Unfortunately, he doesn’t actually explain what the FairTax is — except that “it’s fairer, it’s flatter, it’s finite, it’s family-friendly.” Oh yeah, it will also make the IRS disappear. And then he asks viewers to tell him what they think. I think they’ll tell him: “What the hell are you talking about?”
Anyway, here’s how the organization behind the FairTax describes its plan:
The FairTax Plan is a nonpartisan national grassroots campaign to replace the federal income tax system with a progressive national retail sales tax. It provides a “prebate” to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue replacement and, through companion legislation, repeal of the 16th Amendment.”
